Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
