Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
