Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
