Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
