Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps.
