Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
