Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
