Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
