Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
