Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
