Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
