Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
