Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
