Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
