Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
