Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
