Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
