Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
