Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
